Live from Detroit!

Did we dance or DID WE DANCE? Super Salsa Weekend had more than a lot of music, dancing, workshops and performances: it had a heart and it had soul.A bit of a dream come true, a bit of a mountain to climb. This was the biggest event YA has ever attempted and we are proud to say that Detroit really showed that it is a salsa city. Many months of saving the proceeds from all the other socials allowed us to invite some of the biggest names in salsa, two bands and 600 of our best friends to to make it a weekend to remember.

In the beginning this was just going to be another weekend with some out of town instructors, but little by little it began to grow and take on a life of its own. Conversations led to plans and plans led to actions. Once we added a few more instructors, then we added a band, then we needed more workshops to afford the band, then we needed another night to afford the workshops... Pretty soon we had moreinstructors, morebands, a healthy cup of excitement with a bowl of fear... Two days and nights? Could our scene support that? Were we out of our minds?

India is one who embraces her cultural heritage and shares it. By doing so, she has earned the respect and admiration from music lovers around the globe. Don?t miss her live concert at Music Hall in Detroit on November 9, 2008.

Orchesta Ritmo @ Club Amnesia in the Motor City Casino - Oct. 16th

Club Amnesia in the Motor City Casion hosts musical guests Orchesta Ritmo once a month. Amnesia is an an upscale Vegas style club on top of the casino with great views of Detroit / Windsor.

Orchesta Ritmo plays a fast upbeat blend of Puerto Rican favorites and features many of Detroits best know latin players. There is plenty of seating for relaxing between dances and a late night tapas menu to replentish your energy.

Argentine Tango's Monthly Mixer Opening Night - Oct 19th

Argentine Tango Detroitis adding a Monthly Salsa Mixer to their calendar! This is a great chance for salsa students to meet new friends, practice what you learn, or if your already a hot Salsero/a a chance to show off what you can do. ATD provides a friendly and comfortable atmosphere, in a great location in Downtown Utica.

Opening night is Sunday, October 19, 2008. and they will have the monthly Mixer on the 3rd Sunday of each month.

The mixer opens with a mini salsa lesson starting at 8:30pm, and the dance floor opens at 9pm until about 11pm or so!

Detroit Rock Salsa!

Anticipation! It seemed like an eternity since thelast socialbut it was well worth the wait!After almost a 6 week break, the July salsa social drew in about 300 people from every corner of Michigan.As we always say, the YA Salsa mission is to help expand the Detroit salsa scene, and after seeing all the new faces on Sunday, I have to say that it is working.Thank you all for coming out to dance with us and thank you for helping us spread the word by telling our friends about salsa!

This social was certainly a hot one!I think we all lost about 10 lbs of water weight by then end of the night. People often ask if the American Legion has air conditioning and if it is even on.The answer is YES and YES. Unfortunately the AC is no match for 300 people dancing salsa for 4 hours straight.We do our best to help the AC keep us cool by adding the fans, ice cream treats, and face towels at the front desk,We even try to play slower salsa tracks!I guess the only thing left to do is to dance less?Come on, who are we kidding.That is simply not an option!!Maybe we should all wear less clothes? (evil grin)

June 2008 Super Social Review

Mother Nature. With us or against us?Just when it seemed like our biggest worry would bethe heat, the Michigan weather changed it up and sent the high winds, torrential rain, fallen trees and power outages. On the upside, the storm cooled things down like nothing else and didn't deter more than a handful of the dancers who have been anticipating this Super salsa weekend.

We call them super salsa weekends because they are truly big weekends for YA. Months of planning and effort from many volunteers goes into delivering top notch instructors and performers with unique and interesting styles and talents to our collective doorstep here in Detroit. Offsetting the cost of these super socials is where the majority of proceeds from the regular socials end up. The more support and enthusiasm at the other events, the more encouraged and capable we are of delivering the super events.

The super social weekend started off with a fun impromptu performance with Johnny, Andres and Laura Geldys atThe Harem. Johnny and Andres demonstrated their 2:1 partnering style where they simultaneously dance with the same partner -- pretty slick and of course kudos to Laura for being so exceptionally adaptable. After a fun night there, things started early Saturday with a full day of workshops at the new Jewish Community Center location. After that, it was on to theCanton-Plymouth High School Salsa club's socialand then if that were not enough dancing a final stop at the Dance RevolutionSerious About Salsasocial. Then came Sunday...

High School Musicale

Three way salsa

Enthusiasm and passion.
This is was the intersection last Saturday where theCanton-Plymouth High School Salsa Clubmet YA Salsa. The kids at Canton-Plymouth created their own salsa club to promote unity and understanding of Latino culture and they of course love to dance! That is where YA Salsa came into the picture.

After their annual dance show, the Canton Plymouth Salsa Club finished off Saturday evening with a potluck dinner and a social of their own. We had a nice turnout of about 15 dancers from the Detroit area as well as our guest instructors Johnny&Andres Giradaldo from Boston and Chezron from Colombus Ohio and topped it off with a group of terrific dancers from Toronto who came to hang out and dance for the weekend.

One of the great highlights of the evening was not just Johnny&Andres'performance, but that the reception for the the audience was so overwhelming and positive. In addition we got a chance to dance with the students and their teachers and even provide an impromptu lesson on the basics.

Who says you shouldn't mix business with pleasure? The Young Professionals of Inforum&PAETEC invite those who aspire to greatness in business to perspire a bit on the dance floor too June 24th, 2008 atVincente Cuban Cuisinein downtown Detroit. Join hosts Dana McAllister and Margarida Martini starting at 6:00 PM for networking, socializing and dancing with complimentary Cuban and Spanish tapas from Vincente and dance lessons from professional salsa troupe Xtravaganza.

Inforum's Young Professional Group was created to promote the business, social, and community service of rising women executives and is hosting this event to to highlight the beauty of the Cuban and Latin culture by showing life through dance, music, and food. The event runs from 5:30 -- 7:00 PM and afterwards participants are free to stay for dinner and Vincente's Friday night salsa night.
